"(I Stood on the) Rock of Gibraltar"

I stood on the rock of Gibraltar
I took a stand at Tiananmen Square
I fought the good fight in Trafalger
I wasn't really there

I saw Martin walking up to Lincoln
When he had that dream, you know I heard
I never had so much hope as then
I wasn't really there

I remember the day I heard about that proclamation
It was a sunny June nineteenth, in 'sixty-five
It was a time of rebirth for the whole nation
But not for me, I wasn't alive

I threw that tea way out into the harbor
I raised a musket to be free
I killed myself a couple of Brits, now
Hold on, wait a second, that wasn't me

I stood on the shores of old Hawaii
I saw the planes on horizon far
A thousand screams rose all around me
I wasn't really there.

I fought on the side of the Italians
To this day I don' know what we fought for
Mussolini was one of the good guys
I wasn't really there.

I saw Lenin roll back into Russia
I was in the teeming mass on the city square
I saw him pump his fist into the sky now
I wasn't really there.

I saw the tank get gotten way down in Cuba
I saw old Che take City Hall
Fidel gave me a puff of his last cigar
I wasn't there at all

I raised my kids on the rock of Gibraltar
I took them all to see Tiananmen Square
I told them how I fought back in Trafalger
I wasn't really there
