"My Favourite Affair"

I know you're with that other guy and he's a good friend of mine.
I know you're with that other guy.
So what are we doin' up in my room in the middle of the afternoon?
I know this ain't quite right.

We can pretend we've been taken over by events beyond our control, but
I know we could have walked away
Words we didn't have to say
I guess maybe we wanted it this way.

I didn't know what that look meant from across the room next to him,
I'd admired you from afar.
But then the truth came out after a couple more tonics and gin.
"If you need a ride I have a car."

I ain't sayin' that I'm proud of everything that I've done,
But maybe you just wanted a little fun,
We're not hurting anyone,
That's what I keep on sayin' to myself.

I'm fairly sure that it's a bad idea to do this again,
But that didn't stop us before.
How did we cross that line to being just a little more than friends,
Without being all that much more?

The next time we said hello you just shook my hand
I'll try not to think exactly where my fingers ran
I guess this is where we stand
Maybe you're right and this is for the best.

My favourite affair.
